Questions Pritish Nandy did not answer

suwarn (Fri Aug 15 1997 1:39 IST)
hello

Tarun Jaitly (Fri Aug 15 1997 1:54 IST)
Hello, Hi Pritish. Saare Jahan se accha Hindustan Hamara. How much of truth is there in these words.

v (Fri Aug 15 1997 2:1 IST)
Hello

Tipu (Fri Aug 15 1997 3:30 IST)
Hi Pritish, Is the intelligent brain in India looking at West ? ... I mean Brain drain

Pritish Nandy (Fri Aug 15 1997 3:35 IST)
Nimesh Chand Jain: Yes, I am

Alka (Fri Aug 15 1997 3:35 IST)
Mr Nandy: Why you are always surrounded by controversies...

Samuel Jetley (Fri Aug 15 1997 3:37 IST)
I used to love your work at the Weekly. Journalism then was powerful, with the ability -- as you did yourself so many times -- to bring down govts. Why has journalism become so devalued today?

Frank Camper (Fri Aug 15 1997 3:37 IST)
No, Pritish, got off some time back. I'll get you some day pal!

Sanjay Naik (Fri Aug 15 1997 3:38 IST)
Mr Nandy: As a political observer of India. Do you believe that Gujral government will last its full term??

Rahul Rao (Fri Aug 15 1997 3:39 IST)
My mother spoke to me last night and she spoke about your interview in Bombay Times -- a newspaper which I have never seen -- of Prime Minister Gujral. She says you seem impressed with him. Is he a man to take Indikan to the next millenium?

dejoan (Fri Aug 15 1997 3:39 IST)
hello, I;ve always loved your writing. What are you writing now? And how do you feel about India today and what do you think does the future hold for the country?

Nimesh Chand Jain (Fri Aug 15 1997 3:41 IST)
Thank you, Pritish. But may I understand the basis for your optimism? Is it a consequence of the reform process?

Sanjay Naik (Fri Aug 15 1997 3:43 IST)
Mr Nandy: What is your opinion about Indian government's attitude towards animal rights??? It is very sad that inspite of much protest nothing is happening on the actual front???

Rahul Rao (Fri Aug 15 1997 3:45 IST)
You were one of Indira Gandhi's wunderkinds. Was she not responsible for the decay of Indian institutions? Was she responsible for the despondency that one sees today?

Samuel Jetley (Fri Aug 15 1997 3:45 IST)
What is your vision for India 2047?

Alka (Fri Aug 15 1997 3:46 IST)
Mr Nandy: What went wrong with the great weekly you used to edit one time. And, I read it somewhere that you are planning to revive the Illustrated Weekly. Do you think it has a market to survive?????

Akansha Mathur (Fri Aug 15 1997 3:47 IST)
Hi Mr Nandy, its a pleasure talking to you. As you commemorate the 50th anniversary of Independence, where has this country failed you? As a citizen, what dreams and aspirations have run asunder?

Suman (Fri Aug 15 1997 3:47 IST)
Mr Nandy: What is the most memorable event in great journalistic career?

Nimesh Chand Jain (Fri Aug 15 1997 3:47 IST)
Mr Nandy: Shashi Tharoor in this fora spoke about how the resurgence of Hindu fundamentalism will wreck India's future. Do you agree with this hypothesis?

Alex (Fri Aug 15 1997 3:48 IST)
Mr Nandy: It seems that Bombay is sitting on bombshell which is ready to explode anytime. Do you feel it is safe for any tourist???

ankurshah (Fri Aug 15 1997 3:49 IST)
Hi, What will happen to software industry during this political crises ?

Alex (Fri Aug 15 1997 3:50 IST)
Are you people in Bombay going the Chicago way Mr. Nandy???

Akansha Mathur (Fri Aug 15 1997 3:51 IST)
But Mr Nandy, don't you think that in a nation so bankrupt of leaders that it often looks up to someone like a Sonia Gandhi for leadership...don't you think that she is charismatic enough to revive the dead Congress party?

prasanverma (Fri Aug 15 1997 3:51 IST)
respected sir, if a hostroy sheeter like taslimuddin becomes the state home minister, what would you like to say about the quality of indian politics, and if thing that it has been detoriarating regularly, why don't people like you want to join the active politics. With regards Prasan Verma Moscow State Univ

mohenjodaro (Fri Aug 15 1997 3:53 IST)
Bear with my ditty, for India's a pity; and you, Dear Mr Pritish, Are so very British; Saying things are good, when there is so little food; you think things are going well, most others see the road to hell; for things to really change, today's men are out of range; and that includes me and you. and most others too, what we need is less of wind, and more of Jai Hind!

Nimesh Chand Jain (Fri Aug 15 1997 3:55 IST)
I remember an article you wrote after the Bombay riots condemning the manner in which Hindus killed Muslims. And yet you are a close friend of Bal Thackeray, whose organisation's role in the incidents is no secret. How do you reconcile these two images? Or is just journalistic hypocrisy?

Akansha Mathur (Fri Aug 15 1997 3:55 IST)
But Mr Nandy, India is not Gautam Ghosh, Arundhati Roy or A R Rehman...India is the poor, the illiterate and the exploited. Isn't their condition symptomatic of decay?

Rahul Rao (Fri Aug 15 1997 3:56 IST)
Who are the three politicians who can take India to a fantastic future?

Alex (Fri Aug 15 1997 3:56 IST)
Mr nandy: all lies, in a recent survey. India stood as the 8th most corrupt country in the world. You have Laloos, who have cheated the masses. You have Kesri who rules the country by proxy. You have a lame finance minister, who cannot pass IRA after so many promises. And still , you praise your country.. Shame!!

Alex (Fri Aug 15 1997 3:56 IST)

RaviKC (Fri Aug 15 1997 3:57 IST)
Mr. Nandy, I used to be a regular reader of Illustrated weekly. Why did that mag die out? Many other mags just imitated it.

sagarika (Fri Aug 15 1997 3:57 IST)
Mr.Nandy, ur known to be dynamic personality, but since when u got interested in ensuring that Indians have a bright smile? The pepsodent add was something not really ur kinda stuff, was it?

Samuel Jetley (Fri Aug 15 1997 3:57 IST)
Well said, Akansha. I am surprised that Nandysahab, who was a great chmpion of lost causes, should now become of them, instead of one of us!

Rahul Rao (Fri Aug 15 1997 4:0 IST)
Who are the three politicians who can take India to a fantastic future?

prasanverma (Fri Aug 15 1997 4:1 IST)
IS the indian press is biased ?

SUNIL DEEP (Fri Aug 15 1997 4:1 IST)
Dear Nandy, We got independence 50 years ago. When will we be freed from corrupted politicians? What is your views on this

Rahul Rao (Fri Aug 15 1997 4:2 IST)
Your optimism is touching, Sir, but what is the basis for this touching display? How can we transform this nation of nearly a billion people into a dynamo like China?

shahank (Fri Aug 15 1997 4:2 IST)
Who is Alex Mind your language WHICH IS YOUR HOME COUNTRY LET ME INFORMED II WILL TELL THOUSAND PROBLEMS OF YOUR COUNTRY ? WE KNOW WE HAVE SOME POLICAL PROBLEM , BUT OUR COUNTRY IS GREAT . YOU WANT TO KNOW MORE ABOUT INDIA THEN I WILL TELL YOU UNTILL YOU WILL SLEEPING . OK SHUT UP

Kalyank (Fri Aug 15 1997 4:2 IST)
Pritish, I agree that the country is in a fairly good shape. Don't you feel a lot of the credit goes to the much-maligned non-confrontational Narsimha Rao?

RaviKC (Fri Aug 15 1997 4:2 IST)
Mr. Nandy, you had several investigative reports. Some that got you into trouble for. And maybe some that you apologised for. Looking back would is there any truth in the statement that you were trying to be provocative(tabloid) and thus sloppy too?

Nimesh Chand Jain (Fri Aug 15 1997 4:4 IST)
In your opinion, what are the three positive developments that we can anticipate in the next ten years that propels India forward?

kk (Fri Aug 15 1997 4:5 IST)
Do you think with the advent of so many TV magazines etc traditional magizines and periodicals are going to die?

kk (Fri Aug 15 1997 4:5 IST)
Pritish, I agree that the country is in a fairly good shape. Don't you feel a lot of the credit goes to the much-maligned non-confrontational Narsimha Rao?

priya (Fri Aug 15 1997 4:6 IST)
Dear Mr. Nandy Today being 50yrs of independence,is supposedly a day to celebrate, But what i ask is are we truly free? All the the people who gave up their lives did not die for THIS India, did they?

sagarika (Fri Aug 15 1997 4:6 IST)
Mr. Nandy ur very correct when u say that Rabridevi is rightfully there , but what when there is a defacto power ruling , is she really in power for good or is just agin going to be Laloo& his behind the scenes?

Akansha Mathur (Fri Aug 15 1997 4:6 IST)
Mr Nandy, as one of the country's senior and respected journalists how do you rate the present quality of journalism in India. Is it well rounded or does it leave much to be desired?

kk (Fri Aug 15 1997 4:7 IST)
Priya, what kind of freedom do you lack?

kk (Fri Aug 15 1997 4:8 IST)
Currently how is the internet access from India? Anybody chatting from India?

RavikC (Fri Aug 15 1997 4:9 IST)
Mr. Nandy, If the illustrated was still alive, what would you talk o,f in it in this 50th anniv. isssue? What wonderful layout are you missing? I am sure that would be a hard one for you to pass!

kk (Fri Aug 15 1997 4:9 IST)
Looks like there is a crash at Mr. Nandy's end.

Tamisk (Fri Aug 15 1997 4:9 IST)
Mr Nandy, when did you turn from a journo to a showman?

prasanverma (Fri Aug 15 1997 4:10 IST)
What is the main difference between a politician and a journalist ?

Abdul Kunju (Fri Aug 15 1997 4:10 IST)
I have just logged in. Is Pritish there? If he is, I'd just like to ask him this: Your pal Thackeray says India is headed for a civil war, perhaps as early as 1998. Would you agree with such a prognosis? If so, will the conflict take place between the Hindus and Muslims?

kk (Fri Aug 15 1997 4:10 IST)
Currently how is the internet access from India? Anybody chatting from India?

mohenjodaro (Fri Aug 15 1997 4:10 IST)
Mr Nandy, Rediff just displayed your good friend Chandra Shekhar, who seemed woefully out of ideas or imagination. Why doesn't he retire and let younger people take over?

Akansha Mathur (Fri Aug 15 1997 4:10 IST)
Mr Nandy, where do you see this country placed in ten years time? Why is it that governments have consistently failed in combating poverty and illiteracy?

kk (Fri Aug 15 1997 4:11 IST)
The chat has been pretty slow today. Maybe someone else can type for Pritish. It seems like things are being handled in an inept manner.

S Pant (Fri Aug 15 1997 4:12 IST)
Where is he? Has he left?

kk (Fri Aug 15 1997 4:12 IST)
Pritish, I agree that the country is in a fairly good shape. Don't you feel a lot of the credit goes to the much-maligned non-confrontational Narsimha Rao?

shahank (Fri Aug 15 1997 4:12 IST)

kk (Fri Aug 15 1997 4:13 IST)
Since things are idle today a question for all. Anybody currently in India? Any non-software person?

prasanverma (Fri Aug 15 1997 4:13 IST)
Where have you gone lost sir, i specially came to my univ just for this chat ?

Alka (Fri Aug 15 1997 4:15 IST)
Mr. Nandy:Would you like to comment on the effectiveness of Internet as a interacting media???

kk (Fri Aug 15 1997 4:15 IST)
From what I've seen all day it doesn't look like any of the guests were physically present. On the average they answered one question every 10 minutes. Maybe they were talking thru phone or God know what.

prasanverma (Fri Aug 15 1997 4:17 IST)
so mr kk, we have been cheated

prasanverma (Fri Aug 15 1997 4:18 IST)
sorry, rediff, i'm taking back my words

REDIFF (Fri Aug 15 1997 4:18 IST)
KK: Stay on! Have you read Mr Nandy's latest post? Makes you think, does it not?

kk (Fri Aug 15 1997 4:16 IST)
This is totally disgusting! I am outta here!

REDIFF (Fri Aug 15 1997 4:16 IST)
KK: Mr Nandy is keying in his responses himself. He has been a wordsmith for well over 35 years. I am sure he knows how to key in his responses.

kk (Fri Aug 15 1997 4:18 IST)
After an hour somebody will apologize and that's it. That seems to have become part of the culture. Such unprofessional attitude is what differenciates the progressive countries from the third world. Ciao!

REDIFF (Fri Aug 15 1997 4:21 IST)
No one is apologising, KK. Mr Nandy is a professional writer. You cannot expect him to churn out pat politician-like responses!

Pritish Nandy (Fri Aug 15 1997 4:20 IST)
KK: Be patient, old boy. I am doing my best. What do you want to know? Ask me; I'll answer. I am the only Rediff guest out here who is keying in the answers himself and that is why it is taking a bit of time. But I am here. I am not going away. And, KK, I am ready to answer any question you may have, however unpleasant it may be. Don't worry, my friend.

Akansha Mathur (Fri Aug 15 1997 4:21 IST)
Mr Nandy, where do you see India in the next five years? Why do you think that governments have failed consistently in tackling poverty and illiteracy?

kk (Fri Aug 15 1997 4:21 IST)
Mr Nandy, do you think that the advent of TV news shows and magazines will lead to the extinction of the regular magazines and periodicals?

ank (Fri Aug 15 1997 4:22 IST)
hey pritish, why you are answering only girl, i was asked one question at 3:51 IST my name is ankurshah rember this name you will req this person in future .

kk (Fri Aug 15 1997 4:22 IST)
I'm sorry. I just lost it when there wasn't a response for about 10 minutes.

sagarika (Fri Aug 15 1997 4:24 IST)
Mr.Nandy, we deserve what we get, for instance in my part of the town for mmunicple elections i got to vote & elect a rep., i educated, can think but do i have choice, in that case i get what i dont deserve? What is ur comment Mr. Nandy?

RavikC (Fri Aug 15 1997 4:24 IST)
Mr. Nandy, I agree with you when you said in many words that in a democracy the elected leaders. however bad they are, are supreme. But there has to be a syatem to filter these elements out before the elections. Don't you think so?

sagarika (Fri Aug 15 1997 4:25 IST)
Mr.Nandy, we deserve what we get, for instance in my part of the town for mmunicple elections i got to vote & elect a rep., i educated, can think but do i have choice, in that case i get what i dont deserve? What is ur comment Mr. Nandy?

Alka (Fri Aug 15 1997 4:25 IST)
Mr.Nandy:why is it that your eyes are always covered with glares.I'm a diehard fan of yours and dying to see your lovely eyes.YOUr beard though is sexy.

M (Fri Aug 15 1997 4:26 IST)
But was'nt Rao acquitted of all charges?

prasanverma (Fri Aug 15 1997 4:26 IST)
and this is not democracy sir, this is "tanashahi" to make Ravri Devi the CM of Bihar

RavikC (Fri Aug 15 1997 4:27 IST)
Mr. Nandy, what would be your ideal layout for today's issue if the Weeklystill existed.

R C Sinha (Fri Aug 15 1997 4:27 IST)
What do you think of Leonard Cohen? You like his poems, don't you?

R C Sinha (Fri Aug 15 1997 4:27 IST)

RavikC (Fri Aug 15 1997 4:30 IST)
Mr. Nandy, an unpleasant question.. I know you have had to apologise for your articles on occasion. Is it possible that some of the reports did not have enough data to back them?

prasanverma (Fri Aug 15 1997 4:31 IST)
Why are the most of the journalists not rich and even a village level politician has a maruti? DEMOCRACY !

shahan (Fri Aug 15 1997 4:31 IST)
Dear Pritish, Please answer my question which i was asked at 3:51 IST time , you are answering all other question my name is ankurshah please answer my question

M (Fri Aug 15 1997 4:31 IST)
But Rabri Devi coming to power is significant too, don't you think, Pritish? People in Bihar will have their last shot at the yadav family. If she fails it will give significant importance to the women's bill. Parties which think that only elitist women will benefit from that, will see the difference.

prasanverma (Fri Aug 15 1997 4:32 IST)
and sir, i've giving U questions for last 40 min, just travelled 80km for this,

Pritish Nandy (Fri Aug 15 1997 4:33 IST)
Ankurshah: I have answered your question long back. Check it out.

kk (Fri Aug 15 1997 4:33 IST)
Thanks Mr. Nandy for the response. I agree with you. However I feel that part of the reason Narsimha Rao fell were his own reforms. The freedom for the judiciary leading to judicial activism and his trials, his insistence that corrupt people resign, some extent of freedom to CBI etc that was never seen before etc. Also do you feel that there is more corruption now? I don't think so. I feel it was always there. It's just that now politicians and others are getting caught and are being held accountable for their misdeeds largely due to an overactive judiicary. Thanks!

sagarika (Fri Aug 15 1997 4:33 IST)
Mr. Nandy, thats precisely the ques, do the politicians of today are interested in the well-being of the country, to do something worth & be in the books of history or its just the greenbags that brings tham in. Other wise, why all the politicins, people in high power feature in all sorts of scandals from foddor to shoes? ?

Pritish Nandy (Fri Aug 15 1997 4:34 IST)
Prasunverma: I have answered you too, my friend. Thank you for travelling 80 kilometeres to talk to me. I promise to hang in here till I have answered all your questions. Scout's honour.

shahan (Fri Aug 15 1997 4:35 IST)
Hey Alka, What you want from Nandy . Are you interested with him ......

Alka (Fri Aug 15 1997 4:35 IST)
Mr.Nandy:you always seem to get some sort of pleasure by asking nasty questions to whom you interview.Do you derive some sort of sadistic pleasure by embarrassing your guests? Or is that the way you always are????

Randy Dandy (Fri Aug 15 1997 4:35 IST)
Mr. Nandy, Do you think the press has treated Lalloo fairly ? Do you think we have a free press, uncontrolled even by vested interests ?

R C Sinha (Fri Aug 15 1997 4:35 IST)
Your pal Bal Thackeray says India is heading for civil war next year. Do you agree with such a hypothesis?

sagarika (Fri Aug 15 1997 4:36 IST)
Mr.Nandy, we deserve what we get, for instance in my part of the town for mmunicple elections i got to vote & elect a rep., i educated, can think but do i have choice, in that case i get what i dont deserve? What is ur comment Mr. Nandy?

A R Sen (Fri Aug 15 1997 4:36 IST)
How can you be pals with Bal Thackeray and then slam Hindu fundamentalism? What kind of double standards is that?

prasanverma (Fri Aug 15 1997 4:36 IST)
Thanx Sir, But why do laloo compare himself with Jayprakash narayan and is beeing accpeted(may be forcely) by people for last so many years. Why don't intellectual class try to join the politics, Here in Russia, a very prominent young scientist, Boris Nemtsov has become the Dept PM and doing better than any so called natural born politics, i

kk (Fri Aug 15 1997 4:37 IST)
Talking of politicians, which kind of pilitician do you think is more effective - one who is honest but rigid like Morarji Desai/George Fernandes or one who is flexible and corrupt like Sharad Pawar? Or do you think there are other categories? :)

Ravikc (Fri Aug 15 1997 4:39 IST)
Mr. Nandy, I haven't had much of a response yet from you. I share your optimism in the state of things. Do you think that the media has failed to deliver and not come through with conclusive results on their investigations? Most charges that the press makes die out and are never resolved.

Me (Fri Aug 15 1997 4:41 IST)
Howdy Mr Nandy! I've just logged in to Rediff and find I've missed a great event...The Live Chats!! I see that quite a few questions are quite 'Pritishy...', how does it feel to be on the receiving end of such queries?

jjkko (Fri Aug 15 1997 4:42 IST)
Do you think In INDIA We have to make one law in which Minimum qualification of Member of Parament should be Master degree . Please answer my question i am writting this from USA

prasanverma (Fri Aug 15 1997 4:43 IST)
Why do U and Khuswant Singh, both denounce Indira Gandhi, Anyway U both r my favourities, despite living abroad, i read both of u regularly.

Me (Fri Aug 15 1997 4:43 IST)
Is Mumbai really a Mafialand? What do you think?

sagarika (Fri Aug 15 1997 4:46 IST)
Mr. Nandy,is the success story of modern India really a success. There is no doubt more exposure but what about follow ups. Bofors was something way back in 80's, there were scams like chourhat, latest: telecom scam, Kini case where is the follow up by our modern media, why do these scams just disappear with every new scam?

DKP (Fri Aug 15 1997 4:50 IST)
Mr. Nandy Would you give the noose. (capital punishment)to the killers of Gulshan Kumar if you were to decide.

sagarika (Fri Aug 15 1997 4:50 IST)
Mr. Nandy, why is democrasy always "caught in between" something like India's foreign policy "always sitting on the fence" or just like Narasimha Rao "never say no nor say yes"

M (Fri Aug 15 1997 4:50 IST)
Mr. Nandy, do you think India will be a technological power within the next 20 years?

So, sir, it is time to enjoy real democracy instead of knocking our heads on the things going wrong around us ?

Ravikc (Fri Aug 15 1997 4:52 IST)
Mr. Nandy, I was hoping you'd respond to my query about unsubstantiated reports in the weekly. It's surely an unpleasant question like the many you have asked.

sagarika (Fri Aug 15 1997 4:52 IST)

prasanverma (Fri Aug 15 1997 4:53 IST)
you are too optimist,

Edward Machado (Fri Aug 15 1997 4:54 IST)
Namaskar from Moscow ! Congratulations everybody on 50 years of Independence! I would like to here everybody's including Pritish's opinion onthe following points. Today is a great day for making certain resolutions, and it would be an appropriate exercise in opinion building, especially with an interactive medium like the Internet. We should start with some soul searching and then some analysis of the acheivments and failures of the past 50 years. We have not acheievd literacy level of a developed Nation. Why? Do we have a plan ready to correct this situation? If not, then lets discuss it. SAARC should take an example from the European comunity. India, Pakistan and Bangladesh are disillusioned and misguided youth. Time is ripe to understand each other. For if you look into the future with a hind sight you can visualise, that the true enemies are not within us. Our interests can be mutually contradictory. Alas when will we appreciate this fact! Any Pakistani, Bangladesh brothers tuned in? History is a witness, world order is not indefinate, its dynamic. Lets not wait for the baton to come our way. Rather we should go out and grab that opprtunity. To do this we need the strength and potential of all the 1 Billion Indians, all the Pakistanis and Bangladeshis and not just 500 million literate Indians.

Alka (Fri Aug 15 1997 4:55 IST)
Mr Nandy: Since you are not answering my question I am loggin out. Good Bye.

Albert (Fri Aug 15 1997 4:57 IST)
Hi, Mr nandy, I hope I am not late for the chat...

Pritish Nandy (Fri Aug 15 1997 4:58 IST)
Alka, divine: I have answered your question. Why don't you check it out.

kk (Fri Aug 15 1997 4:58 IST)
Thanks Mr Nandy for all the answers. It surely has been the most enjoyable chat of the day though it is 5 AM in California. One last question - You have interviewed so many celebrities, which interview do you treasure the most? Thanks!

Pritish Nandy (Fri Aug 15 1997 4:58 IST)
Albert: No. Ask and I shall try and feed your curiosity.

sagarika (Fri Aug 15 1997 4:59 IST)

Randy Dandy (Fri Aug 15 1997 4:59 IST)
Edward has very pertinent point. As an incisive journalist, you may be well placed to tell what or who is coming in the way of a successful universal primary education and child welfare.

What will u do if Atal Bihari vajpeyee invites U to join BJP

sagarika (Fri Aug 15 1997 5:2 IST)
Mr. Nandy, why is democrasy always "caught in between" something like India's foreign policy "always sitting on the fence" or just like Narasimha Rao "never say no nor say yes"

Albert (Fri Aug 15 1997 5:2 IST)
Mr Nandy: I am sorry for being late. Why people scare by your name. I used to see PN show earlier. I think there is no one who can be better than you in compering a program. But, what is the reason that you are absent in Print media>>>>>

Mike Bothelo (Fri Aug 15 1997 5:2 IST)
It's been good talking to you, Pritish. You must be a damn busy guy and I appreciate the time you spent today on the Rediff Chat. I hope you return to journalism -- or enter politics as a nominated member of the Rajya Sabha.

Janaki Ballabh (Fri Aug 15 1997 5:5 IST)
Mr. Nandy, how do you explain your interest in vegatarianism and prevention of cruely to animals ? Was it anything to do with Ms. Maneka Gandhi ?

kk (Fri Aug 15 1997 5:5 IST)
Pritish, with the onalught of TV do you think the print media is going to be marginalized? Also it seems that literacy drive has slowed down a lot. Do you think telivision will help?

prasanverma (Fri Aug 15 1997 5:5 IST)
WHo is the best indian politician after independence, according to U, don't say laloo , pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeese, althoughi 'm from bihar

Ravikc (Fri Aug 15 1997 5:9 IST)
Mr. Nandy, apart from the last response you haven't talked much of your real speciality - journalism. You have a said a lot about politics and society to which you are really an observer. Would you talk some more about your career as a journalist please?

sagarika (Fri Aug 15 1997 5:11 IST)
Mr. Nandy,is the success story of modern India really a success. There is no doubt more exposure but what about follow ups. Bofors was something way back in 80's, there were scams like chourhat, latest: telecom scam, Kini case where is the follow up by our modern media, why do these scams just disappear with every new scam? Mr. Nandy, u havent answered my ques, pl do.

kk (Fri Aug 15 1997 5:14 IST)
Thanks Pritish! I enjoyed your interviews a lot when I was in India. Unfortunately they are not accessible here. I loved the way you probe deeper and ask the controversial questions without being contfrontational. I think overall the media in India is far better than that in the US. Here it far to polarized and obseqious to the politians. Unfortunately I missed the Lata interview. I am curious what her answer was. I am a big fan of hers. I believe she wanted to marry the music director C. Ramachandra.

prasanverma (Fri Aug 15 1997 5:18 IST)
thanx, but answer to my second question, about open society, pleeeeeease

gdgod (Fri Aug 15 1997 5:18 IST)
Mr Nandy which has been your most awkward interview? I mean Awkward for you?

Randy Dandy (Fri Aug 15 1997 5:21 IST)
Mr. Nandy: As a media-person what do you think of the recent ban on DTH TV ? Do you think there is there is hidden motive behind the move ?

Ravikc (Fri Aug 15 1997 5:21 IST)
Although I didn't have my questions answered, it was nice to get your perspective on things. I have stayed up most of the night, I need to freshen aup an leave. Take care and Bye.

Pritish: There used to exist a business class/caste in Bengal. Why does everybody want to be a Brahmin? When people like Mr. Basu's (CM) son run a business he is chastised and always pointed out to be a wrong doer. What do you think that can be done to entice these youths to seek out opportunity even if that means they have to leave their state(which most don't want to)?

Yeah Darwinian theory whether it has been a fundamental truth or not may not be accpetable to certain classes of people but Human race all over the world today sure appears to be hell bent in proving it the eternal truth. There is a phrase often used amongst the friends i move along, "that fella is doing well for himself, so and so has made a good niche for herself", the ethos is very well captured it is the individual and the rest. The competition that we are facing today is something that we have to our comparisons are relative and we do not set up absolute definitions of our own 'being' or objectives that we want to 'be'. :(

M (Fri Aug 15 1997 5:38 IST)
I guess that is why succesful people like you have to leave the state. You are an inspiration to many who share your opinions. Probably people will take motivation from your( and other Begalis like you)success and decide to awaken from the morass they are in. They have to flee the state. But after being successful they should also try to give something back.

gdgod (Fri Aug 15 1997 5:43 IST)
Thanx for the answer..heartening to know we have hope! How do you define Success of a Nation, sir?

M (Fri Aug 15 1997 5:44 IST)
I like that answer of yours you gave to gdgod. But that is not at all a communistic opinion. Why don't the leaders of Kerala and WB have opinions like that? Why don't they dream about an India where she has her own Bill Gates?!!!

gdgod (Fri Aug 15 1997 5:45 IST)
Thanx again!!! Good Luck!! I'm off to the techie chat, now.
