Maruti Udyog launches variant of Alto

India's largest carmaker Maruti Udyog on Thursday launched a variant of its popular model Alto.

The 1061cc vehicle -- Alto Vxi -- would sport a price tag of Rs 377,000 (ex-showroom Delhi), company officials said.

The new model Alto VXI would be equipped with Maruti's true response electronic power steering which is safe and provides better steering control at a high speed, a company official said.

The new model has been launched to cater to the fast emerging 'B' segment in which Maruti has a number of models including Zen and Alto, he said.

EPS also has an in-built computer which contributes to higher responsiveness of the steering. It also entails lower maintenance cost and is more compact than the ordinary hydraulic power steering, he added.

The new variant would retain all the features of Alto VX 1.1.

Maruti sold over 35,000 units of Alto till date. The company posted 9 per cent sales growth in July 2001 at 30,168 units over 27,665 units sold in July 2000.
