Tata Motors said on Tuesday it has not fixed any deadline for resolving the impasse in setting up its greenfield small car plant at Singur in West Bengal but was committed to meet the 2008 deadline for production to start.

"We have no Plan B and we want to start production at Singur on schedule and we are working towards it," Tata Motors' Managing Director Ravi Kant said, adding that it was keen for an early resolution of the dispute following the agitation by the Trinamool Congress against allotment of land by the West bengal government to the company.

"We are getting proposals for setting up the small car project from elsewhere but we want that it be set up at Singur, which will be the mainstay for production of our small car," he said.

The Orissa government has reportedly offered land for the project to the Tatas.

A mini-auto city is being created at Singur and the state government has already secured consent for 927-acres of the 997-acres allotted for setting up the Rs 1,000-crore plant in West Bengal.

Tatas have already secured 1,000-acres in Uttaranchal for manufacture of its popular 1-tonne Ace trucks, he said, adding that the Tata small car cannot be manufactured without carrying out major modifications.

Tatas have already identified 70 vendors for supplying components and sub-assemblies to the small car, he said, adding that the company was slightly behind schedule in project work at Singur and would have to start work soon to meet the 2008 deadline.

Tata-Buddha talks: Tata Motors' officials discussed on Tuesday technical issues related to the construction of its small car plant at Singur with the West Bengal government as the state Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya said land for the project would be handed over on schedule.

The officials visited the state electricity board and the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority to discuss issues like power and water supplies needed for the plant, Industry and Commerce Secretary Sabyasachi Sen told PTI.

"The discussions were purely technical in nature," he said. Earlier, Bhattacharya said land would be handed over to Tata Motors on schedule. He said the company's officials were here and would not have to be 'called' for the handover.

"We do not have to call them. They are here. Work is on," he told reporters when he was asked when he would call Tata Motors' officials to hand over the land.

Tata Motors MD said in Delhi on Monday that the Singur factory was a 'dream project' of company Chairman Ratan Tata and the firm was determined to proceed with it as planned.

Noting that the firm was prepared to begin production of the small car costing Rs 100,000, Kant said Tata Motors had networked with global firms for technology as part of its pre-production exercise, and also firmed up plans for vendors at the Singur site.
