Federal Bureau of Investigation officials are assisting Pakistan intelligence agencies in tracking down the mastermind behind the recent assassination attempts on President Pervez Musharraf, media reports said.

Acting on a tip off, a joint team of the Federal Investigation Agency, the Special Services Group and FBI left for Bannu, bordering Afghanistan on Sunday in search of Amjad Farooqi, who is believed to have planned the attacks.

Farooqi has been identified as a member of a Pakistani Islamic militant organisation, local daily Dawn said.

Musharraf said recently that investigators have busted almost the entire network behind the attempts.

Without identifying Farooqi, Musharraf described him as a very intelligent person who managed to evade the dragnet
spread for him.

Only one suspect has so far been arrested by agencies in connection with the two attacks, the daily said.

In a recent TV interview, Musharraf said all the military personnel involved in the attacks have been arrested
and would be tried in a military court shortly.
