Incessant rains continued to lash Nashik and its adjoining areas on the third consecutive day on Wednesday forcing the Irrigation Department to release more than 35,000 cusecs of water from Gangapur and Darna dams on Tuesday evening, prompting evacuation of 100 families in nearby villages.
About 100 families in Saykheda and Chandori villages, living on the river banks, were shifted to safer places, official sources said in Nashik and added 300 families on the banks of river Godavari have been alerted following rise in the water level.
Urging people not to believe in rumours, District Collector Mahesh Zagade said the flood situation in Nashik was under control and all major and medium dams of the district were safe.
Vehicular traffic on highways and state highways was going on smoothly, but slowed down due to rains, while long distance trains on the central track towards Mumbai continued to remain cancelled till August 12.
However, some trains were running from Igatpuri and Manmad railway stations, Nashik Road Railway Station Manager D S Rathod told PTI.
Nasik Municipal Corporation has already served notices to the house owners whose units were under threat of collapse.
