Gutka baron Jagdish Joshi, accused of having underworld links, surrendered his passport to the Crime Investigation Department in Pune on Thursday.

A person representing the Goa Gutka owner surrendered the passport, Joshi's advocate Vijay Kakade said.

He said the Central Bureau of Investigation would begin recording Joshi's statement from February 28.

Meanwhile, the Bombay high court on Thursday rejected Joshi's plea seeking extension of a stay on the non-bailable warrant against him.

Joshi is accused of helping underworld don Dawood Ibrahim's brother Anees Ibrahim to set up a gutka manufacturing unit in Karachi. Recently, in a television interview, Joshi denied he had any underworld links.

He said it was Rasiklal Manikchand Dhariwal, owner of Manikchand Gutka, who had links with Dawood Ibrahim.

Both the gutka barons, living abroad, were asked to come to India for questioning after the case was transferred to the CBI.

Dhariwal is still in the Gulf.
