Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Wednesday instructed the Central authorities to extend all medical care for Trinamool Congress chief Mamta Bannerjee in view of deterioration in her health.
The Eastern Command Hospital has been instructed to offer whatever medical assistance is requried by Banerjee, PM's media adviser Sanjaya Baru said in New Delhi.
"Because of the deterioration in Mamta Banerjee's health and her refusal to accept state government's help for medical care, the prime minister has instructed Central authorities to extend all medical care required," he said.
Banerjee has been on a hunger strike for the last 24 days in protest against alleged forcible acquisition of farmland for the Tata Motor's small car project at Singur.
The West Bengal government, which has already acquired the required 997 acres of land for the project, is firm on its stand that it would go ahead with the project.
Meanwhile, Bharatiya Janata Party leader and former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee spoke to Mamta Banerjee over phone and enquired about her health, a day after she was put on respiratory support.
A TC leader said Vajpayee also informed Mamta about the decision taken by National Democratic Alliance at its meeting in New Delhi on Wednesday to seek President A P J Abdul Kalam's intervention in the Singur row.
The firebrand TC chief has been on hunger strike for the last 24 days demanding that the Buddhadeb Bhattacharya government return the farmland in Singur, acquired "forcibly" from the farmers, for the Tatas' proposed car project.
Mamta continued to have breathing problems while her personal doctors did a blood test on her.
