A total of 200 people were killed and 714 injured in Tuesday's serial blasts in suburban trains in Mumbai, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister R R Patil said on Wednesday.

Replying to a debate on an adjournment notice on the issue in the assembly, Patil had earlier said that 183 people died in the blasts, but later revised the death toll to 200.

Railway Minister Lalu Prasad has announced compensation of Rs 5 lakh to each of the families of those killed and a job for every affected family, Patil said.

Referring to the failure of mobile and landline networks after the blasts, Patil said talks with MTNL and private telecom companies had revealed this was the result of heavy pressure on the networks immediately after the attacks.
